When Italian artist Alessandro Pessoli told his gallery that the subject of his upcoming show was Christ, they were skeptical. Not only is the subject highly unusual in Chelsea but so is the sincerity reflected in Pessoli’s paintings. Experience the monumental crucifixion scene featuring lemons as a symbol of Arcadia and acidity, and the predella removed from it’s traditional place below the altarpiece and hung along the nearby wall. From across the room, a beautifully rendered figure mocks Christ with tongue stuck out and fists raised, and a self-portrait is made with paint rags which function as relics.
